Walker Information
Walks Program Summary
- Each Sunday.
- On Thursday evenings in the summer.
- On alternative Saturdays of each month (Saturday Strollers).
Since the introduction of the Rambler's Walk Manager system that allows groups to enter details of their walks to a central database we no longer produce a six monthly program twice a year. As a result the number of walks shown on our led walks listing has been reduced as walks are planned over a much shorter time scale.
So that people interested in the types of walks that we lead the "Recent Walks" page shows the walks that the group has provied during the past two months.
Our weekly Sunday walks are normally within an hours drive of Llantrisant. We meet at the Llantrisant Leisure Centre at 9:00am for car sharing. The start time for these walks is based on the estimated time to drive from the Leisure Centre.
The Thursday evening walks run between May and July; these start at 7:00pm and we meet at the walk's start point.
Our program includes the Saturday Strollers program. These were introduced in September 2012 The walks start at 10:00am at the designated meeting point. The lengths of the walks are between 3 and 5 miles. The leisurely nature of the strolls are similar to the summer evening walks that have proved to be very popular.
Please read the Walker Information section for advice on clothing, refreshments, transport costs and liability.
We use the normal RA walks grading system. Please see the grade section for more details.
New walkers may have three 'taster' walks after which, if they wish to continue to walk with the group, they will be expected to join the Ramblers' Association.
General Information for those intending to join us on a walk
Meeting Point: On Sundays we meet at Llantrisant Leisure Centre Car Park (Click for map ST046831) for car sharing unless otherwise stated.
For the other walks the start point for the walk is normally provided.
N.B. If there is any reason to suspect that the walk may be cancelled or changed in any way, please contact the leader before setting out. In such cases the leader or substitute will be at the leisure centre to give further instructions. He may not be at the start of the walk. Anyone going directly to the start of the walk does so at their own risk.
Walks: It is important to have suitable footwear. It is also essential to have with you AT ALL TIMES, wet weather clothing, warm clothes etc.
Refreshments: Bring enough food & drink for a coffee break, lunch & afternoon breaks on full day walks.
Weather: In case of bad weather the walk can be cancelled or the route changed at the discretion of the Leader.
Dogs: Please contact the walk leader to see if you can bring your dog. All dogs must be kept under control and on a lead (see the Countryside's Dog Walking Code) and be appropriately vaccinated.
Liability: Whilst leaders will take every care for safety of walkers, the group can accept no liability for injury. Please satisfy yourself that you are fit and well enough equipped for the walk you join. If you are unsure of your fitness level try a short and easy walk first; it is much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted. For your own and others' safety read and abide by any instructions issued by the walk's leader. Though walking is one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.
In Case of Emergency: Ramblers strongly recommend that walker carry a card giving their contact details and any relevant medical information. See the Ramblers' ICE Card for a blank example.
Leaving the walk early: Anyone leaving the walk prematurely must advise the leader.
Tasters: New walkers may have three 'taster' walks after which, if they wish to continue
to walk with the group, will be expected to join the Ramblers' Association.
This you can do by clicking on the link
join the Ramblers.
Transport Costs: Our group encourages car sharing from our meeting point in Llantrisant. Drivers often appreciate it when passengers make a voluntary contribution.
Extra Information from Ramblers
The Ramblers' Assocation has provided some general advice on walking with our group.
Walk Grading
The walk grade and distance are not related. For example, it is possible to have an easy 15 mile walk or a hard 6 mile walk.
Easy: Walks for anyone who does not have a mobility difficulty or a specific health problem or is seriously unfit. Suitable for pushchairs if they can be lifted over occasional obstructions. Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn.
Leisurely: Walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing recommended.
Moderate: Walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country. Walking boots and warm waterproof clothes essential.
Moderate+: We have introduced this ourselves - these walks will be between Moderate and Strenuous.
Strenuous: Walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. May include hills and rough country. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothes essential.
People in doubt about their fitness should contact the leader in advance.
